ART THERAPY

For some, traditional talk therapy can feel overwhelming or restrictive, especially when addressing deeply personal or complex topics. Art therapy provides a different kind of entry point, allowing people to begin their journey at their own pace and express what words may not capture. This can be particularly meaningful for individuals with a trauma history or those who process information differently, such as neurodivergent individuals.

How it works

Art therapy is a unique and powerful form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process to foster self-discovery, and personal growth. At Centre Self Collective, we offer a compassionate and supportive space where clients can explore their inner worlds through art-making, whether that involves painting, drawing, sculpting, or collage. By using art as a medium, we tap into the minds natural creative resources to address emotional, mental, and even physical well-being.

Our approach to art therapy is integrative and holistic. We know that each persons journey is unique, which is why we draw on a wide range of psychological interventions and therapeutic practices to support you on your healing path. At Centre Self Collective, we understand that no single method fits everyone, and we are committed to providing personalised, flexible care to meet your needs.

Do I Need Artistic Skills?

Absolutely not! Art therapy focuses on the creative process rather than the final product. There’s no need for artistic talent—our goal is to help you find meaning and growth through self-expression, not to create a “perfect” piece. Many clients find the process freeing and insightful, regardless of their experience with art.

What to Expect in a Session?

In each session, you’ll have access to a variety of materials and freedom to explore. Your therapist will guide you through reflective conversations about your artwork, helping you gain insights and make meaningful connections. Sessions may involve specific activities or themes tailored to your goals, or they may be more open-ended to allow your own creativity and intuition to guide the process. Afterward, you’ll have the chance to reflect on your artwork with your therapist, exploring the thoughts, feelings, or memories that emerged.

Centre Self Collective values the lived experience and contributions of people from all cultures, genders, sexualities, bodies, spiritualities, ages, abilities and backgrounds. We are committed to cultivating inclusive environments and are dedicated to building a sustainable and an environmentally aware practice.

Acknowledgement and Commitment to First Nations Justice. Centre Self Collective acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live, work, and offer care. We recognise their deep and enduring connection to land, waters, skies, and community - and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. We honour the wisdom, strength, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across all communities. As social workers and mental health practitioners, we hold a deep awareness of the systemic harm our profession has contributed to, including the forced removal of children, policies of assimilation, and the ongoing disruption of families, cultures, and Country. These injustices continue to reverberate through intergenerational trauma and ongoing structural inequities. We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. Centre Self Collective stands in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We wholeheartedly support the Uluru Statement from the Heart, the journey toward Treaty in Victoria, and the principle of Aboriginal self-determination.
