Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidenced-based, experiential psychotherapy developed by Steven Hays in 1984. ACT sits under the umbrella of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and shares some similarities with traditional CBT. However, goes further by encouraging people to develop psychological flexibility through developing skills in managing difficult thoughts and emotions and connecting with values (what is important to you) to strengthen commitment to change.

What does Acceptance and Commitment Therapy involve?

From an ACT perspective it is understood that as part of a rich and meaningful life stress and hardship will naturally arise. In order to manage hardship and stress ACT teaches people to develop psychological flexibility by working on six core processes:

  • Contacting the present moment (being in the present)
  • Acceptance (opening up to your experience)
  • Defusion (unhooking from unhelpful thoughts and emotions)
  • Self-as-context (flexible perspective taking)
  • Values (know what matters to you)
  • Effective Action (do what it takes)

How it works

In therapy we explore these six processes as they relate to you and identify appropriate interventions, tools and strategies to help you make sense of the difficulties in your life and create that change you want to see.
