Is an EMDR Intensive Right for You?

At Centre Self, we’re committed to offering therapeutic options that cater to your individual needs. One such option is our EMDR intensives, available at our Daylesford and Brunswick locations in Victoria. EMDR intensives are a highly focused form of treatment—a significant commitment and investment in your mental health. However, they might not be the right fit for everyone.

Understanding EMDR Intensives

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a therapy designed to help you heal from traumatic experiences and distressing life events. This intensive approach can accelerate your healing journey but requires certain considerations to ensure it’s suitable for you.

Is an EMDR Intensive Suitable for You?

To get the best results from EMDR intensives, it’s beneficial to have stability and consistency in areas like your work and living situation. Having a strong social support network is also crucial—friends or family members you can confide in and who can provide practical and emotional support.

We also encourage you to seek alternative support if you’re currently feeling acutely suicidal, engaging in self-harm, or struggling with significant dissociation. Your safety and wellbeing are our top priorities, and we want to ensure you receive the appropriate care for your current circumstances.

If you’re unsure whether an EMDR intensive is right for you, please reach out. We offer a 45-minute obligation-free consultation with our EMDR intake clinician to help determine if this treatment is suitable for you at this time.

Developing Essential Skills for EMDR

Before starting an EMDR intensive, both you and your therapist need to feel confident that you possess certain foundational skills. These skills enhance the effectiveness of the EMDR process and include:

  1. Body Awareness: Noticing sensations in your body.
  1. Emotional Awareness: Recognising and identifying your emotions.
  1. Thought Awareness: Observing your thoughts, including positive and negative beliefs.
  1. Mindfulness of Mental Activity: Noticing where your mind goes, such as memories or time-related thoughts.
  1. Dual Awareness: Staying present in the room with your therapist while processing internal experiences.
  1. Communication: Reporting to your therapist about your experiences during sessions, including what’s happening or not happening.

If you’re not quite comfortable with these skills yet, that’s perfectly okay. You can develop them with your current therapist or with us at Centre Self. In fact, honing these abilities can be the initial focus of your EMDR intensive. Once you feel confident in these areas, we can proceed with the processing phase in intensive EMDR sessions.
