Understanding you: Why formulation matters | EMDR Schema Therapy Daylesford Thornbury

At Centre Self Collective, we begin every therapeutic journey by developing a formulation. A formulation is our shared process of understanding you- the experiences, patterns, and ways of coping that have shaped your life. Rather than focusing only on symptoms, we explore the story behind them: how your past experiences, core beliefs and emotional responses connect to what’s happening now.

Sometimes called case conceptualisation, formulation draws on psychological theory to make sense of how your difficulties developed and why they persist. But more than that, it’s about making sense of your experience in a way that feels empowering, hopeful, and compassionate.

Making Meaning Not Just Managing Symptoms

Formulation helps shifts the question from “What’s wrong with me?” to “What has happened, and how did I learn to survive?”

Together we bring curiosity to your history, relationships, emotional world, and protective patterns into a framework that helps us understand why things feel the way they do. Rather than simply identifying behaviours to change, we explore the conditions that created them; the environments, relationships, and internal experiences that shaped your coping responses.

This understanding often brings a sense of relief and validation. It transforms therapy from problem-solving into a collaborative process of meaning-making, where together we hold a fuller, kinder picture of your story.

Building Understanding and Clarity

Good therapy requires more than empathy, it needs direction and focus. Formulation provides both.

It helps us identify themes, memories, and beliefs that are most central to your experience, guiding where we place attention and how we pace the work. In approaches such as EMDR and schema therapy, formulation allows us to pace the process carefully, ensuring the work is attuned to your readiness and avoids overwhelming or reactivating old pain.

By working in this structured, thoughtful way, we protect against rushing or “doing to” rather than “working with.” Formulation keeps therapy grounded in care, clarity, and collaboration.

How We Approach Formulation at Centre Self Collective

At Centre Self Collective, we draw on EMDR and Schema Therapy formulation tools to develop a personalised roadmap for your therapy.

  • EMDR formulation helps us understand how distressing memories and the beliefs attached to them continue to shape present-day reactions – in emotions, body sensations, and relationships.

  • Schema formulation helps us to identify lifelong patterns, or “schemas”, that began as attempts to meet core emotional needs, such as safety, love, or belonging. These schemas can become self-limiting when they are triggered in current relationships or life transitions.

Together, these frameworks help us trace how early experiences influence both your inner world and your outward patterns of connection. They also give us direction, showing which areas may be ready for reprocessing, reflection, or compassionate repair.

Our goal is always to tailor therapy to you: your history, identity, values, and goals, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model.

A Foundation

In our EMDR Immersive Programs, the process always begins with time dedicated to formulation. This is to ensure that every step is grounded in understanding, readiness, and care.

Before we revisit painful experiences, we make sure we understand why they matter, what they connect to, and how to approach them safely.

Formulation also gives structure to depth. It helps you see progress not just in reduced distress, but in increased understanding, self-agency, and compassion for the person you’ve always been becoming.

Why It Matters

Formulation matters because understanding changes everything.

Formulation offers language to make sense of suffering, builds agency through understanding, and creates the emotional safety needed for true change to occur.

At Centre Self collective, our integrated approach, weaving EMDR, Schema Therapy, and trauma-informed principles ensure that therapy honours both your story and your strength.

Because before we revisit pain, we take the time to understand it and to hold it with care.

Centre Self Collective values the lived experience and contributions of people from all cultures, genders, sexualities, bodies, spiritualities, ages, abilities and backgrounds. We are committed to cultivating inclusive environments and are dedicated to building a sustainable and an environmentally aware practice.

Acknowledgement and Commitment to First Nations Justice. Centre Self Collective acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live, work, and offer care. We recognise their deep and enduring connection to land, waters, skies, and community - and we pay our respects to Elders past and present. We honour the wisdom, strength, and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across all communities. As social workers and mental health practitioners, we hold a deep awareness of the systemic harm our profession has contributed to, including the forced removal of children, policies of assimilation, and the ongoing disruption of families, cultures, and Country. These injustices continue to reverberate through intergenerational trauma and ongoing structural inequities. We recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. Centre Self Collective stands in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We wholeheartedly support the Uluru Statement from the Heart, the journey toward Treaty in Victoria, and the principle of Aboriginal self-determination.
